Historical Museum and Village

Founded in 1984, the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village aims to preserve the history of the area and share the island’s past with locals and visitors. Historic buildings managed by the museum include a schoolhouse built in 1896, a packing house from 1900, and a tea room and a post office from 1926. Each of these buildings comes with its own unique story and houses relics from Sanibel’s past.

The Historical Museum offers tours to give you an in-depth look around with the help of a knowledgeable staff member. This is a great option for groups traveling on a budget, as admissions are just $10 for adults, and children under 18 get in for free! By visiting the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village, you’ll get a better understanding of the area’s unique tale from the beginning to today.

Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife

If you or someone in your group is a nature lover, you have to stop by the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, or CROW. This teaching hospital allows guests to witness the incredible creatures of the area as they are treated and restored back to their full health. They’ve been active for almost half a century taking care of all species of native wildlife.

CROW is a popular destination for both visitors and locals because there is something new happening every single day. Every weekday, you can sit in on presentations covering various topics about the work happening at CROW. You can also take a guided tour of the grounds, led by a rehabilitator or other staff member. Finally, there are tons of exhibits for both native and nonnative species for you to explore. Admission costs $12 for adults and $7 for kids. Be sure to check their website for operating hours, as they can change seasonally.

Periwinkle Way

Want to experience the special culture of Sanibel Island? Visit Periwinkle Way, the commercial hub of Sanibel. Start at Sanibel Lighthouse, a 120-year-old landmark with access to the beach. Continue strolling down the way to find tons of unique shops and mouthwatering restaurants. If you want to get in a workout, there’s also a great bike trail for you to get around.

Even though this is an outdoor attraction, covered walkways make it a great option for a rainy day activity. You’ll find everything you need here, from grocery stores to jewelry shops to eateries large and small. It combines the convenience of a strip mall with the laid-back feel you want from your Florida getaway. Keep in mind that this is the main way through Sanibel, so you may want to plan your visit earlier in the day to avoid some of the traffic.

When you’re visiting Sanibel Island, there’s so much to see and do that it can feel difficult to fit it all in. However, make sure to give these three stops a chance. You can also work with our vacation rental coordination service to get the most out of your getaway.
