A Golfer’s Vacation on Sanibel Island

Welcome to the golf capital of the country. Southwest Florida is a dream-come-true for the golf lover. It has more golf-holes per capita than anywhere else in the country – and Sanibel shares in that luxury. Some of the courses are private and require membership or residency to play but many are open to the public – so they offer a great golfing opportunity for the vacationer. Just think of playing in a beautiful, sub-tropical, year-round environment on courses that will challenge your game with long and short contoured fairways and enough water hazards and sand bunkers to keep you alert and your language salty. The cost to play varies depending on the course and the time of year. Cart rentals are available and, in some cases, club rentals.

There are three golf courses on Sanibel

Two of the golf courses are open to the public:

1) The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club

The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club is located on the east end of the island at 949 Sandcastle Road. It is an 18 hole course of 5,606 yards that was voted the best golf course in Lee County by Gulfshore Magazine. It is a beautiful setting and well maintained. They have the only driving range on the island. There are both cart rentals and club rentals at the Dunes. They offer a one day fee for 18 holes or 9 holes or multi-day fees or a full membership. The fees vary by time of year. There is a restaurant in the clubhouse but it’s available only to the members. You can contact them for more information or call 239 472 3355.

2) Sanibel Island Golf Club

Sanibel Island Golf Club – formerly known as Beachview Golf Club – is also located on the east end of the island at 1100 Par View Drive. It is an 18 hole course of 6,300 yards. It’s a pretty course with many worthy challenges. There is a single day as well as a multi-day fee or a 30-day membership. The fees vary by time of year. There are cart rentals. The clubhouse has a restaurant called the Blue Coyote Supper Club which serves lunch and dinner or a beer after 18 holes. For more information, they can be reached at their website or 239 472 2626.

3) The Sanctuary Golf Club is the third golf course on Sanibel Island, but it is private. If you’re considering a long vacation or maybe even owning a vacation rental on Sanibel Island one day, this is well worth consideration. It has tennis and wellness facilities, and is always hosting social events and is available for weddings.

There are also golf courses off the island for those interesting in exploring. The one closest to the island is the Fort Myers Country Club on McGregor Boulevard just 2 miles south of the Edison-Ford Estate. It is a public, municipal course and host to the Yuengling Open. They can be reached at 239 936 2547.
